Falkinham’s article, “Epidemiology of infection by nontuberculous mycobacteria (1996)” examines a number of topics including NTM, NTM disease after the AIDS epidemic, detection, recovery ,and identification of NTM and its ecology and physiology. The author supports the information provided in his review through his vast compilation of references and no figures or data tables. The author’s purpose is to compile existing research on NTM in order to reveal trends in NTM, particularly with regard to the correlation between NTM and AIDS. The research given in this article is important on a global health scale as it provides an in depth and vast “guide” to NTM and suggest further questions to be pursued. This article is important to the contribution at hand because it provides critical information in the understanding of NTM and how it is diagnosed as well as its correlation to AIDs post endemic.
